Professional take-home teeth whitening is one of the most effective ways to brighten your smile, and it’s a treatment we carry out for patients here in Westcliff-on-Sea on a regular basis.
The process is straightforward, but there’s a great deal of misinformation online about how it works, what it can achieve, and who it’s suitable for. This guide sets the record straight.
What Take-Home Whitening Actually Involves
The treatment begins with an appointment at the practice. We take precise impressions of your teeth, and from those we fabricate custom-fitted whitening trays — thin, flexible guards moulded exactly to your dental arch. Those trays are what make professional take-home whitening meaningfully different from anything you can buy over a pharmacy counter.
Once the trays are ready, you collect them along with a supply of professional-grade whitening gel. The gel contains a measured concentration of carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. Under UK law, only registered dental professionals may supply whitening products containing more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, and the maximum permitted concentration for take-home use supplied by a dentist is 6%. Anything stronger than that carries a substantially higher risk of sensitivity and soft-tissue irritation.
You wear the trays at home, typically for one to two hours per day or overnight depending on the gel your clinician prescribes, over a course of two to four weeks. Progress is gradual and, frankly, more stable for it.
Why Custom Trays Make the Difference
This is a point worth dwelling on. Most people who try whitening strips or over-the-counter kits are disappointed not because whitening doesn’t work, but because the delivery method fails them.
A poorly fitting tray or a strip that doesn’t conform to the tooth surface leaves the whitening agent in uneven contact. You end up with blotchy results, gel leaking onto the gums, and sensitivity that could have been avoided. In our experience, patients who have previously tried supermarket kits are often sceptical when they first come to us — and consistently surprised by the difference custom trays make.
The fit matters. Full stop.
Which Teeth Respond Best
Natural tooth enamel responds well to professional whitening. Yellow or light-brown staining from coffee, tea, red wine, and age-related discolouration typically responds most predictably. Grey or blue-toned discolouration — often caused by old trauma, tetracycline antibiotic use in childhood, or intrinsic mineral changes — responds less reliably.
Crowns, veneers, bridges, and white fillings won’t change colour with whitening gel. That’s a biological fact, not a limitation of the product. If you have significant restorative work at the front of your mouth, it’s worth discussing realistic expectations with your clinician before starting treatment. We’ll always give you an honest assessment.
Worth knowing: the NHS notes that teeth whitening isn’t suitable for everyone, including those under 18, or anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. A pre-treatment assessment with a qualified dentist ensures the treatment is appropriate for you — you can read the NHS guidance on teeth whitening for a fuller picture of who should and shouldn’t proceed.
What to Expect During the Course
Most patients notice a visible change somewhere between the end of the first week and the start of the second. The teeth continue to brighten gradually through the remainder of the course. Trying to rush the process by using more gel or wearing the trays longer than advised doesn’t produce better results. It increases the risk of sensitivity.
Some sensitivity during treatment is normal. Teeth may feel temporarily more responsive to cold drinks or sweet foods. This settles within days of completing the course for the majority of patients. The pattern we notice most often is that sensitivity peaks around days three to five, then diminishes steadily.
On days when sensitivity feels more pronounced, it’s perfectly acceptable to take a day off from the trays. That said, if sensitivity is severe or persists for more than a few days after finishing, contact the practice.
How the Results Compare
| Factor | Professional Take-Home Kit | Over-the-Counter Kit |
|---|---|---|
| Tray fit | Custom-moulded to your teeth | Generic, one-size tray or strip |
| Gel concentration | Up to 6% hydrogen peroxide (legally prescribed) | Maximum 0.1% hydrogen peroxide |
| Clinical oversight | Assessment by registered dentist | None |
| Typical shade improvement | Several shades lighter | Minimal to modest |
| Longevity of results | One to three years with care | Weeks to a few months |
| Sensitivity risk | Managed with professional guidance | Unmanaged, can be worse with poor fit |
Aftercare and Maintaining Your Results
The first 48 hours after completing a whitening course are particularly important. The enamel surface is temporarily more porous during and just after treatment, which means pigmented foods and drinks can re-stain teeth more readily in that window. Avoiding coffee, tea, red wine, and dark sauces for those initial 48 hours makes a meaningful difference to how well the result holds.
Beyond that, sensible habits extend the result considerably. Brushing twice daily, regular hygiene appointments, and limiting the frequency of highly staining food and drink all help. More accurately, it’s not so much about eliminating these things entirely — it’s about managing exposure. A cup of coffee through a straw, followed by a rinse with water, does far less damage than coffee sipped over an hour.
Top-up whitening is straightforward. Because we provide custom trays as part of the initial treatment, a future course simply requires purchasing more gel rather than remaking the trays — provided the trays still fit well, which they typically do unless your dentition has changed significantly.
