Most first-time patients walk in expecting the worst and walk out a bit puzzled by how uneventful the whole thing was. That’s the usual pattern, and it’s a pattern we like.

If you’re in Essex and considering your first time lip fillers in Essex, the goal of this guide is simple: tell you what’s actually involved, what to ask, and what to ignore. There’s a lot of noise around lip filler online, and not all of it is useful.

Should You Even Get Lip Fillers?

Honest answer first: not everyone should. Some people want fillers because they’ve watched a lot of TikTok and convinced themselves their lips are inadequate. They’re not. Lip fillers should be a refinement of something you already like, not a fix for something you’ve talked yourself into hating.

The patients we feel best treating are the ones who can articulate a specific reason. They’ve lost volume with age. They’ve always had a slightly flat upper lip and want a touch more shape. The cupid’s bow has lost definition. There’s a small asymmetry that bothers them in photos. These are concrete, addressable concerns, and 0.5ml to 1ml of filler can usually deliver a meaningful change.

The patients we ask to think a bit longer are the ones who say things like “I want lips like [celebrity]” or “I want them as big as possible.” Lips don’t transplant, and bigger isn’t a goal in itself. The lips that look best are the ones that suit the rest of your face.

That’s the bit that gets glossed over.

The Consultation Comes First

Any clinic worth visiting will insist on a consultation before treatment. We do. The consultation isn’t a sales pitch (well, it shouldn’t be). It’s an opportunity to assess your lips, understand your goals, check medical history, and decide together whether filler is the right call.

Things we’ll ask about:

  • Previous filler treatment, including where, when, and how much.
  • Cold sore history. Filler can trigger an outbreak in people prone to them, so we sometimes prescribe an antiviral to take prophylactically.
  • Current medications, especially anything that thins the blood.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding. We don’t treat in either case.
  • Allergies, particularly to lidocaine.
  • Recent dental work or planned dental work in the next two weeks.

That last one surprises people. Lips swell after dental work, and we want to assess them at baseline, not while they’re still recovering from a filling appointment.

What to Ask the Practitioner

You’re allowed to ask questions. You should ask questions. Anyone offering injectable treatments who can’t or won’t answer them isn’t someone you want putting needles in your face.

The questions we’d want a first-time patient to ask:

  • What’s your training and qualifications? Are you medically registered?
  • Which filler product will you use, and why this one?
  • Do you keep hyaluronidase on the premises in case of complications?
  • What’s your protocol if something goes wrong?
  • Can I see before-and-after photos of your work?
  • What aftercare support do you provide, and what does follow-up cost?

The Save Face register, available here, lists accredited cosmetic practitioners and is a sensible starting point if you’re researching clinics. Worth checking before you book anything.

Pricing in Essex

Lip filler pricing varies considerably across Essex, from around £100 to over £300 per ml depending on the practitioner and product. Cheaper isn’t always worse, and pricier isn’t always better, but extreme low prices are a flag worth paying attention to. Hyaluronic acid filler costs the clinic real money. If someone’s offering 1ml for £80, they’re either using a low-grade product or they’ve cut corners somewhere else.

Our latest pricing at Westcliff Dental Practice:

Treatment Price Best for
0.5ml lip filler £120 First-time patients, subtle results
1ml lip filler £200 More noticeable volume, second appointments

For a first session, 0.5ml is almost always the right starting point. You can always add more two to four weeks later. You can’t easily take it back, although as we’ve discussed elsewhere, hyaluronidase makes that possible.

Actually, on reflection, the price isn’t the most useful comparison point between clinics. The right comparison is qualifications, product brand, follow-up policy, and whether they keep emergency drugs on site. A clinic charging £150 for 1ml that lacks hyaluronidase is a worse choice than one charging £220 for 1ml that has it. Cost matters, but it’s third or fourth on the list.

What the Treatment Itself Feels Like, and the First 48 Hours

It’s mildly uncomfortable, not painful. We apply numbing cream first, leave it on while we prep, and then begin injecting. The filler contains lidocaine, which adds to the numbing as we go. Most patients describe pressure rather than pain, with a brief sharper sensation around the corners of the mouth.

The whole appointment is usually 45 minutes door to door. The actual injecting takes around ten minutes. The rest is consultation, prep, and aftercare advice.

You’ll be swollen afterwards. Expect that. The lips will feel firm, look bigger than the final result, and possibly look a touch uneven. None of this is the final outcome. Swelling peaks at 24 to 48 hours and settles over the following week. Bruising, when it happens, fades within five to seven days.

What we ask first-time patients to do:

  • Don’t touch, press, or kiss enthusiastically for the first day.
  • Avoid alcohol that evening and ideally the next day.
  • Skip the gym, sauna, and hot baths for 48 hours.
  • Sleep slightly propped up on the first night.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Don’t book a major social event for the next week.

You’ll find articles online suggesting you should massage the lips immediately to break up lumps. In our experience, that’s bad advice. Pressing on freshly placed filler in the first 24 to 48 hours can shift it from where we placed it. If lumps persist after the first two weeks, then we’ll review and decide whether massage or anything else is appropriate.

How to Decide if Now’s the Right Time

The right time, in our view, is when you’ve thought about it for a while, you’ve identified a specific outcome you want, you’re not chasing a trend, and you’ve found a practitioner you trust. Rushing in tends to produce regret. So does delaying indefinitely once the decision feels settled.

Some patients come to a decision in a fortnight. Others take a year. Both are fine. There’s no right pace for this kind of thing, and the patients who do best are usually the ones who took the time to get comfortable with the choice rather than the ones who booked on impulse.

If you’d like to discuss your first lip filler appointment with us, we’d be glad to talk it through. Westcliff Dental Practice is on 01702 344 500, and there’s no obligation to book treatment after a consultation. Sometimes the best outcome from a first appointment is deciding to wait.
