Dental implants are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth, providing a long-term solution that mimics the natural tooth structure. However, many individuals wonder whether they can access this treatment through the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts surgically inserted into the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. They serve as sturdy anchors for artificial teeth, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures, restoring both function and aesthetics to the smile. Unlike traditional dentures or bridges, dental implants offer a permanent solution that helps preserve jawbone health and prevents adjacent teeth from shifting.

Can I get dental implants from NHSNHS dental services

The NHS provides a range of dental services to eligible individuals, including routine check-ups, fillings, and extractions. However, the availability of certain treatments, such as dental implants, may be limited and subject to specific criteria.

Availability of dental implants on the NHS

Access to dental implants through the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK is limited and typically reserved for cases where the treatment is deemed medically necessary.

Due to budget constraints and prioritisation of essential healthcare services, dental implants are not widely available through NHS-funded dental practices. Instead, eligibility for NHS-funded dental implants is determined based on specific criteria, such as the severity of oral health issues or the impact of missing teeth on overall health and well-being.

Priority is often given to individuals with significant dental problems or those who require tooth replacement due to trauma, congenital defects, or medical conditions. As a result, patients seeking dental implants through the NHS may face lengthy waiting times and stringent assessments to determine their suitability for treatment.

It’s essential for patients to discuss their options with their NHS dentist and explore alternative tooth replacement solutions if they do not meet the criteria for NHS-funded dental implants.

Private dental implants vs. NHS

Private dental implants offer several advantages compared to accessing dental implants through the NHS. Firstly, private dental practices typically provide more flexibility in scheduling appointments, allowing patients to receive treatment more quickly and conveniently.

Additionally, private dental implants offer a wider range of treatment options, including advanced implant techniques and materials that may not be available through NHS-funded services. Private practices often provide personalised care and attention, with dedicated treatment plans tailored to meet the individual needs and preferences of each patient.

Patients opting for private dental implants can benefit from enhanced aesthetics and long-term durability, as private practices often use high-quality materials and employ experienced implant specialists. While private dental implants may incur higher costs compared to NHS-funded treatment, many patients find that the added convenience, personalised care, and superior outcomes justify the investment in private dental care.

Cost of dental implants

The cost of dental implants can vary depending on factors such as the number of implants required, the type of restoration used, and any additional procedures needed, such as bone grafting. Private dental implants can range from a few hundred to several thousand pounds per implant, making them a significant investment for many patients.

For individuals who are not eligible for NHS-funded dental implants or prefer not to undergo surgery, there are alternative tooth replacement options available:

  • Dental Bridges: Dental bridges are a common alternative to dental implants, particularly for patients with adjacent healthy teeth. This option involves anchoring a prosthetic tooth (or teeth) to adjacent natural teeth, providing a fixed and stable replacement. While bridges offer a less invasive solution compared to implants, they require the alteration of healthy adjacent teeth to support the bridge structure.
  • Partial Dentures: Partial dentures are removable dental appliances designed to replace one or more missing teeth within the dental arch. These appliances typically consist of a combination of artificial teeth attached to a gum-coloured base, which is secured in place using clasps that attach to natural teeth. While partial dentures are a more affordable option compared to dental implants, they may require periodic adjustments and maintenance to ensure proper fit and function.
  • Complete Dentures: Complete dentures are removable prosthetic devices used to replace a full arch of missing teeth. These appliances consist of artificial teeth set in a gum-coloured acrylic base that rests directly on the gums. While complete dentures provide a non-invasive and cost-effective solution for edentulous patients, they may require adjustment periods and regular maintenance to accommodate changes in jawbone structure and ensure optimal comfort and functionality.
  • Resin-Bonded Bridges: Also known as Maryland bridges, resin-bonded bridges are a conservative alternative to traditional dental bridges, particularly for replacing missing front teeth. These bridges involve attaching a prosthetic tooth to adjacent natural teeth using metal or ceramic wings bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth. While resin-bonded bridges offer a less invasive option compared to traditional bridges, they may not be suitable for all cases and may require periodic replacement due to wear and tear.

I had a private emergency appointment booked by mistake in error. The private dentist looked at my missing filling and said it was only half missing. Told receptionist that a was on Universal Credit and the £ 73 charge was wavered by Private dental as it was a mistake by receptionist cancelled NHS six months check up. Appointment was rebooked to see my usual NHS dentist.

I am a very nervous visiting the dentist but Daanish is always very kind, patient and puts me at ease. Thank you Daanish and all the staff at the practice.

It was my first appointment with Negin, the most pleasant of dentists, from Hungary.,she was so thorough and pleasant. I am so happy to be continuing my treatment with her. I have been with this practice over 25 years and have been disappointed since my long term practitioner left in Covid, but this has restored my trust. Thank you Negin. Brenda
